Not your ordinary cake.
OK, so this post isn’t about ethnic or cultural issues, but it is such a darn cute story about getting beyond a different prejudice, I had to share it. This is from a Yahoo article.
Coming out to your parents isn’t usually easy, but Tumblr user ellende-generes (real name: Laurel) did her best to make the conversation a piece of cake. Actually, make that a whole cake.
Fifteen-year-old Laurel posted a photo of a cake she made for her parents as a way of announcing that she is a lesbian. Loud and proud in bright green frosting, the cake reads, “I’m gay.”
Accompanying the cake was a note:
good morning parents,
i’m gay. i’ve wanted to tell you for a long time. i thought doing it this way would be a piece of cake. i hope you still love me. i mean, it’s hard not to love someone who baked you a cake.
all my friends know and still love me. your acceptance would be the icing on the cake.
i hope you, much like this cake, are not in tiers.
i hope we can look back on this and say “boy, this one really takes the cake.”
it gets batter.

The coming-out cake did the job. Laurel posted an update saying, “My mom saw it and cried of happiness. We hugged and cried together. Then, we all ate the cake and talked. I am very luck to have such supporting parents and to have so much support from you guys. Thanks everyone! Have a gay day!”
Her dad was supportive, too. “My dad saw the cake and came into me room and hugged me and laughed. He said he loved me and the cake and the letter and everything was perfect. Brb crying.”
Now that’s love.

No one should have to live a lie or pretend they are someone else just to avoid being ostracized. Good for her.
And what great parents.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all teens were this open with their parents?

I don’t believe a 15 year old can officially claim himself/herself as gay. People are forgetting one thing… hormones. When you’re a teenager, hormones/puberty can cause you to have feelings for just about anyone. But now in the world that we live in, where being gay is pretty much normal and the popular thing, as soon as a teenager starts getting attracted to a single person of the same sex thanks to puberty and hormones, then they think they’re gay. Sorry, but wait a few years before you decide, mmkay? We’re forgetting that this girl is a child. Not an adult. Same thing goes with other teenagers. It’s so messed up.
Have to respectfully disagree with you on this. I think lots of 15 year olds know fully well which gender they are attracted to. And I think the most important part of the article though is the acceptance she got from her parents for how she felt about herself at this stage of her life, whether she was gay or not.
