Jeremy Lin Is Bigger Than Basketball

Lin mania continues.

I haven’t weighed in on the whole Jeremy Lin mania and debate going on in the sports world. And I feel I would be remiss if I did not.

So let me throw my two cents in.

I think it is fantastic that Lin has gotten so much attention. Clearly the attention he is getting is mainly due to the fact that he is an Asian basketball player in a league that is generally dominated by Blacks. That is undeniably a big part of the story because trust me as a basketball fan, there are many examples of players stepping up from time to time and making a splash. Few get the mania that Lin is getting.

But I don’t have a problem with that. I think it is great that Asian-Americans and Asians in general have an American sports star they can look up to in a sport that usually does not have any, especially since Yao Ming has stepped out of the light. And besides, Ming wasn’t American. Lin is. Any time someone breaks down stereotypes I think it is great.

Now with that being said, I also have to say I was not surprised by the ignorant headline that ran on the espn.com site, “A Chink In The Armor.” It was only a matter of time before someone said something stupid in a public forum. As a society we simply do not have enough Asian stars and leaders yet.

So good for Jeremy Lin, however long his moment in the sun lasts, more power to him. The benefit for all Asians, young and old, is undeniable.
