Marc Anthony Has To Deal With Bigots Who Think He Is Not American

As American as Apple Pie.

As American as Apple Pie.

I know in America we have the right to be stupid and ignorant, but I swear  I think we should have a basic right as a nation to kick people out that don’t have a base level of intelligence. Latina magazine reported this:

This is crazy! Not only do 11-year-old Mexican-American boys get attacked when they sing songs about the U.S.A., now even big stars do, too. Twitter users took to social to post about their hatred (and flaunted their ignorance, no less) when Marc Anthony sang God Bless America at Tuesday’s MLB All Star game, reports NBC Latino.

(No one is exempt!)

Despite the fact that Marc Anthony is a born-and-bred New Yorker (he grew up in Spanish Harlem), people questioned if they were the only one saw his performance as “un-American” and even questioned his citizenship status. Others focused on his pronunciation, saying he rolled his r’s during the performance for the word “American.”

Here are some of the tweets:

Why is Marc Anthony singing “God Bless America?” He’s not even American. Shoulda got someone sweet like Kesha –  Spencer Babcock (@jakebabcock)

Marc Anthony singing God Bless America on the MLB Allstar Game……….am I the only person that finds that unAmerican – Jerrell Rock Golden (@SirRock1001)

Another disgrace Marc Anthony singing god bless America. Is he even an American citizen? – Brian Edwards (@Dusboy7)

I’m sorry but I just have to say it. Dumb asses.

Imagine Hating Yourself So Much You Would Discriminate Against Yourself

Would discriminate against his own parents probably.

Would discriminate against his own parents probably.

Ok this guy gets my nomination for idiot of the week: (from The Huffington Post)

A former campaign volunteer to South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) on Friday defended his membership in a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled a white supremacist organization. Roan Garcia-Quintana said the group, the Council of Conservative Citizens, “supports Caucasian heritage” but denied that it is “racist.”

“Is it racist to be proud of your own heritage? Is it racist to want to keep your own heritage pure?” Garcia-Quintana said in an interview with The State newspaper. According to Garcia-Quintana, who is Cuban-American, “racist is when you hate somebody so much that you want to destroy them.”

His comments were made two days before Haley’s campaign formally cut ties with the conservative activist on Sunday, writing in a statement that, “we were previously unaware of some of the statements [Garcia-Quintana] had made, statements which do not well represent the views of the Governor.”

Garcia-Quintana serves on the board of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group which opposes, “all efforts to mix the races of mankind,” or to “promote non-white races over the European-American people.” It also opposes any attempts “to force the integration of the races.”

The link between Garcia-Quintana and the group was first widely reported last week, months after he had been chosen to be part of a special steering committee to reelect Haley.

Representatives for the Haley campaign initially defended the conservative activist, telling The State in an email that, “there is nothing racial about this Cuban-American’s participation in the political process.” The email, from Haley campaign aide Tim Pearson, noted that Haley is Indian-American.

Garcia-Quintana also runs an anti-immigration group called the Americans Have Had Enough Coalition, which fights what it calls the “Illegal Alien Invasion.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Garcia-Quintana does not consider himself Latino, but a descendant of the Spaniards who settled Cuba. He writes on his professional biography that he was, “made in Havana and raised in Savannah.”

Dude even hates himself for being Latino. Wow.

Jason Richwine Should Have His IQ Tested

I guess facts can be made to support any argument.

I guess facts can be made to support any argument.

What an idiot. Here is what one of the leading researchers at a conservative think tank wrote a few years back about Hispanic immigrants to the U.S.

[n]o one knows whether Hispanics will ever reach IQ parity with whites, but the prediction that new Hispanic immigrants will have low-IQ children and grandchildren is difficult to argue against. From the perspective of Americans alive today, the low average IQ of Hispanics is effectively permanent.

Wow. Goes to show that an education does not guarantee someone will not be an idiot.

The author of that statement, which came from a dissertation he wrote in college, though it has been shown that he still believes such drivel, is Jason Richwine, of the Heritage Foundation, one of the major opponents to immigration reform going on in Washington. No wonder Heritage is against immigration reform when they have people like Richwine working for them. Strangely, the Heritage Foundation is trying to back away from what Richwine wrote in that paper. Yet they keep him on staff and happen to agree with the implied point of his argument, that we should not let more Hispanic immigrants into the U.S.

Geez.

Here is a full article on this craziness.

The Browning of America

A changing American identity.

A changing American identity.

Saw this very interesting article in The Huffington Post:

Welcome to the new off-white America.

A historic decline in the number of U.S. whites and the fast growth of Latinos are blurring traditional black-white color lines, testing the limits of civil rights laws and reshaping political alliances as “whiteness” begins to lose its numerical dominance.

Long in coming, the demographic shift was most vividly illustrated in last November’s re-election of President Barack Obama, the first black president, despite a historically low percentage of white supporters.

It’s now a potent backdrop to the immigration issue being debated in Congress that could offer a path to citizenship for 11 million mostly Hispanic illegal immigrants. Also, the Supreme Court is deciding cases this term on affirmative action and voting rights that could redefine race and equality in the U.S.

The latest census data and polling from The Associated Press highlight the historic change in a nation in which non-Hispanic whites will lose their majority in the next generation, somewhere around the year 2043.

Despite being a nation of immigrants, America’s tip to a white minority has never occurred in its 237-year history and will be a first among the world’s major post-industrial societies. Brazil, a developing nation, has crossed the threshold to “majority-minority” status; a few cities in France and England are near, if not past that point.

The international experience and recent U.S. events point to an uncertain future for American race relations.

Read more here. I do think the next 10 years are going to see a redefining of America. But that will not come without a lot of tension and growing pains because these years will see huge changes in our make-up.

Carolla Wants To Know What’s Wrong With Blacks And Latinos

Tough but necessary discussion.

Tough but necessary discussion.

California’s Lt. Governor got into an interesting discussion the other day with radio host Adam Carolla. Carolla took the conversation into interesting territory when he said this about the lack of banking accounts among Blacks and Hispanics in the state:

“I want to know why [Blacks and Latinos] are struggling,” Carolla continued. “Do Asians have this problem? Why do so many [Blacks and Latinos]? Blacks have been here longer than we have. What about Asians–they were put in internment camps. Are they at the check cashing places?”

“Why are [these problems] concentrated in the African American community?” Newsom responded. “Look at the history. It’s naïve to suggest that those things don’t matter.”

“How about the Jews?” asked Carolla. “No problems in the past? Whose had it worse? Why are the Jews doing well? […] Why do some groups do so much better? I’ll tell you why: They have a family who puts an emphasis on education.”

Carolla then credited socioeconomic inequality on the lack of two-parent households.

“The family is the number one problem in the Black community. […] It’s simple. Fathers, stay at home, raise your family, do your homework with your kids, put an emphasis on education like the Jews, like the Asians, and let’s see what happens to the problem in 20 years.”

Newsom definitely wasn’t expecting that kind of discussion. But frankly I’m glad Carolla went there. His points need to be discussed in the light of day because I am sure people say these things in private anyway. And I do believe, while he grossly oversimplified the cultural components, and the history, there is room to discuss his points.

Here is the rest of the story.

Ann Coulter Now Blames Hispanics

Most divisive nominee.

Most divisive nominee.

Ann Coulter can’t help herself. Now instead of advising the Republican party that it is in their best interest to court the Hispanic population considering that group almost single-handedly handed Obama the White House, she is instead attacking Hispanics.

In a column she wrote a few days ago, in which she made fun of the Spanish language by titling it “America Nears El Tipping Pointo” she said this:

…Hispanic immigrants, who — because of phony “family reunification” rules — are the poorest of the world’s poor.

More than half of all babies born to Hispanic women today are illegitimate. As Heather MacDonald has shown, the birthrate of Hispanic women is twice that of the rest of the population, and their unwed birthrate is one and a half times that of blacks.

That’s a lot of government dependents coming down the pike. No amount of “reaching out” to the Hispanic community, effective “messaging” or Reagan’s “optimism” is going to turn Mexico’s underclass into Republicans.

She then takes it further with this gem:

…contrary to stereotype — Hispanics are less likely to be married, less likely to go to church, more supportive of gay marriage and less likely to call themselves “conservative” than other Americans.

Rather than being more hardworking than Americans, Hispanics actually work about the same as others, or, in the case of Hispanic women, less.

Yeah, if Republicans keep thinking like Coulter, Democrats may have permanent control of the White House.

Latinas Come In Various Shades

Zoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario, known as Zoe Saldana, is Dominican and Puerto Rican.

The Hollywood Reporter did a piece on the hottest young Latinos in Hollywood and it was very good to see that they, like Latina magazine, are very good at, recognizing that Latino and Hispanic also includes Black Hispanic people. On their list were of course two of my favorite’s Rosario Dawson and Zoe Saldana.

Kudos Hollywood Reporter.

Arizona’s “Hispanic Problems”

Come on Arizona. Learn the difference.

Seriously Arizona? Seriously?

The headline was simple: Arizona’s Ethnic Studies Program Ruled Illegal.

I’m really starting to wonder if Arizona is the new Alabama or something. That’s too bad considering I’m actually a big fan of the geography and natural beauty of Arizona. But when it comes to the politics and the us against them, especially when the them is the Hispanic population, they have lost me. First the ugly laws designed to push illegals out, a move that most rightfully saw as overstepping the state’s boundaries and also one that too easily targeted anyone with Mexican heritage, and now this.

I’m might have to get like Thelma and Louise and start driving around the state of Arizona to get to New Mexico and Texas. The wierdest  part of the ruling was this this:

Kowal’s ruling, first reported by The Arizona Daily Star, said the district’s Mexican-American Studies program violated state law by having one or more classes designed primarily for one ethnic group, promoting racial resentment and advocating ethnic solidarity instead of treating students as individuals.

The judge, who found grounds to withhold 10 percent of the district’s monthly state aid until it comes into compliance, said the law permits the objective instruction about the oppression of people that may result in racial resentment or ethnic solidarity.

Which means in the state of Arizona, according to this, there can be no ethnic studies of any kind. Save of course for the standard teachings based on predominantly European perspectives. I am sure the intent of that law was a good one. But a reality that doesn’t allow for cultural studies, which is not the same as teaching a “racial” separation is silly. There is a difference. One that Arizona clearly does not get.

But then again, maybe they do and this isn’t about the class. Here is a link to the full article.

So Now Mexican-Americans Are White?

A shift in definition?

So here is more proof that this whole silly notion of “race” is idiotic. I read an article that now says the white population is growing because more Hispanics, who didn’t previously identify as white, did so in the most recent Census in 2010.

This change occurred because the government made a change in it’s concept of Hispanic. In previous years Hispanic was defined as a a “race.” Now it is an ethnicity.

The issue to me isn’t whether this is right or wrong, but that it shows these racial concepts are so arbitrary. So my Mexican-American wife who has never considered herself white by any stretch, is all of a sudden white? Nothing has changed about her. The box that is supposed to define her has changed.

Give me a break. When will we get over these silly notions?

Here is a link to the article on the subject.
