I have to say I was thoroughly surprised when a friend told me about the new Mixed, Black and Hispanic, Spider-Man, in the Marvel alternate universe storyline. But I am extremely happy to see that Marvel had the guts to do it.
Already some are calling it political correctness for Spider-Man to be something other than White, you just have to look at some of the commenters on any of the many articles on the Internet to see that. But I don’t get people who feel that way. Why is it so outrageous that a minority or Mixed kid, would also want to don the Spider-Man clothes? Why can’t they/we be superheroes too? In the Marvel alternate universe story, Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man is dead. So this kid steps up to pick up where he left off. It is not more heroic if someone of a different skin tone did the same thing.
But I do have to say it does my heart good to know that for someone like my son, and daughter too, who loves Spider-Man, it is so cool that he can see a hero that looks like him. He doesn’t have too many opportunities for that.
So kudos to Marvel for having the brains and guts to do it.
